Give An Education To A Trash Picker's Child

Our purpose to motivate and encourage the trash picker’s and other less fortunate children to aim for higher education continue since we started this project with GlobalGiving community 9 years ago. Coming to our year 10, we would like to start sharing with you the story of some of the children that have been with us since they were in Primary or  MS until today they are in College.

Laila is one of our College Students. She is studying at one of the Universities in Jakarta, specializing in teaching education. She said, ‘now adays less and less young people are interested in teaching and I have been wanting to become one”

Laila came to XSProject when she was almost quit her last year of MS because her father could not afford to pay her school expenses. ‘I could not participate in school exams, but when XSProject helped pay my schools expenses, I passed the exams with good grades. I was able to continue my study through HS and now I am in College’

My parents inspire me to continue my education while I have the opportunity and the support from XSProject. My father has to work hard to provide for his family. With only Primary education, it is hard for him to get a good and steady job, especially when my mother passed away when I was in MS. I want to prove to my father and fulfill my late mother wish for me to have much higher education than them.

Being a university student, I want to earn more skill and knowledge beyond the classes. I join campus activities, such as teaching workshop, students leadership workshops, etc.

Recently I received the news from the University that I am one of the University scholarship recipients for 2 years. I hope to be able to graduate by that time. I am very happy because I can proof to my father and XSProject that I can do better because of the support.

We are approaching the end of another difficult year at XSProject, due to the pandemic and followed by many unfortunate events that happen around the globe. All of us at XSProject continue to be grateful for the support and contribution to our social programs contributing to the education and growth of our children.

Our Kindergarten program is now on the third batch. The children who were in batch 1 have progressed to 2^nd grade. We are preparing our batch 3 children so they can enter the 1^st grade in the new term – July 2024. The teachers are learning more to create a good program and manage the funds wisely so that the program can continue sustainably.

This year, we have a total of 13 students who are now in College. We have supported them since they were in primary school. It’s been over 7 years since we started giving children the opportunity to continue their education after graduating from high school/vocational school - there are already 6 who have graduated - all girls and 2 boys will also graduate this year.

Some students managed to gain high achievements in school beyond their studies. Sofi took part in martial arts (pencak silat) competitions in junior high school and now she is continuing in vocational school and wants to take part in competitions at the provincial level. Syifa was active in high school - and was immediately accepted into university without exams due to her achievements at school. Our March report. These successes of the children inspire middle and high school students to continue studying and can go to College.

This year, we added skills training for single mothers in the community to increase their income. One of them was Anita whom we taught to make handicrafts, Christmas ornaments, and other small item products and then we helped to sell them. Anita has made many products and they are selling well.

Showing and providing more opportunities and new experiences outside the world they are living in will give them more reasons to work hard in school and gain more knowledge.
