All of us at XSProject Indonesia would like to express our gratitude and how grateful we are. A BIG THANK YOU for your support of our programs in 2021. Many generous and thoughtful donors have contributed to our social programs.

The year started with the continued pandemic situation and few months ago as we started to feel it is almost over a new virus emerged. Despite the pandemic and the current situation, it has not discouraged the children, communities and XSProject Organisation to keep moving forward and fighting to survive in carrying out its vision and mission.

The New Year started in the New Facility where the children were able to enjoy a cleaner and greener environment to do their homework, read books, and indulge in many other activities whilst also following strict health protocols. As the children still had to continue distance learning the new facility also helped to facilitate their education better. In March as the schools slowly re-opened, we received a number of toy and staple food donations for the children. Together with supporting school we created some fun educational and outdoor activities to entertain them. When Ramadhan approached, we kept the children busy in the afternoon to keep them engaged like reading the Qur’an, playing games and creating arts and crafts. Whilst the children were involved in the activities, we invited their moms to educate them on their health and had simple health check-ups for pregnant mothers.

The children had their end of school year in July and received their report cards. Despite the challenging times and limited learning conditions of having no internet access, and inadequate facilities they managed to graduate and progress to the next level. As we continued to have activities for them, we also had the opportunity to give them healthy snacks and meals, to keep them well-nourished during the pandemic. When the second wave hit Indonesia and schools were halted, some schools for Early Childhood Education and Development (PAUD) in early September, started two times a week. To assist the primary and secondary school children in their online learning we provided them with a tutor to guide them. By doing this we noticed a significant change and improvement in the children’s development.

Progressing through the end of the year we provided ear health check-ups for all the children and adults including their parents. The benefits of health services received by the poorest people in Indonesia are very minimal in comparison to the upper class and wealthy. It was then decided considering the need, ear check-ups will be carried out regularly, as well as other health check-ups such as: eyes, teeth, and general check-ups for children and parents.

Both parents and children have been very happy and relieved with the facilities, care and support provided from XSProject. We continue to plan better facilities to support and keep them comfortable. Your donation, time, energy and support to XSProject has a direct impact on making this happen. XSProject helps the children to aim to have a better life not just for themselves but also for their parents. Showing and providing more opportunities and new experiences outside their world will motivate them to work hard in school and to be eager for more knowledge.

We hope you will continue to support our work in the trash picker community. You are making the difference for them.

Ear Check-Ups for All Children and Adults

Health services in Indonesia have not always been sociable for the poor and it is more inclined to facilitate the upper middle class. The benefits of health services received by the poorest people in Indonesia are also very minimal in comparison to the upper class and wealthy. Taking this into consideration, XSProject throughout the month of September held ear check-ups for all children and adults at our creative room facility centre.

When PAUD (Early childhood education programs) teachers conducted monthly health checks for the children, they discovered that almost all the children's ears are dirty, some even have infections. So, they contacted the clinic that has been collaborating with XSProject foundation called Medikatama clinic. This clinic has been working together with us for more than 5 years. All children and parents whenever they are sick, they go there and don’t need to pay for their check-ups but at the end of the clinic charges us accordingly.

The clinic then arranged the Ear (ENT) Doctor to check all the PAUD children together with all the other children. Ear checks were carried out 3 times last September:

The first was for PAUD, the second and third for elementary, middle, high school, college students and the staff at XSProject foundation. In total, the Doctor examined more than 80 people. From the examination, some had to be repeated because their ear condition was quite severe.

The cases of poor ear health in the Cirendeu scavenger community are quite common, considering the place where they live, as well as the lack of parental attention to ear health and health in general towards the children. This ear check-up activity will be carried out regularly, as well as other health check-ups such as: eyes, teeth, and general check-ups for parents.

Education Continues During Pandemic

Due to the second wave of Covid-19 that hit Indonesia, the government has imposed Emergency Public Activity Restriction since July. Thus, the plan to open some schools in July was halted. However, in September some Early Childhood Education and Development schools have started 2 times a week. Primary and Secondary schools have also slowly opened with a restricted schedule from 7:30 am – 10:30 am.

XSProject continues to provide activities for the children like painting and sports to entertain them. During July - August XSProject provided the children the space and resources to facilitate their online learning. We provided a mentor to assist the students with their online classes and homework. We noticed a significant change in the children’s development as they have gone through some tough challenges due to the online education. Some Primary school students are unable to complete their homework correctly as they are unable to understand the instructions clearly. The problem is that these children are only able to communicate with their teachers with mobile phones. We provide them with mobile phone credits to ease their communication with their teacher. Apart from these facilities we are also monitoring their classes to ensure everything is smooth.

In addition to these activities, we also had the opportunity to give them healthy snacks and meals, providing healthy nutrition during the pandemic. Parents are also involved in preparing the healthy meals so the children feel happy.

Both parents and the children were happy and felt relieved due to support from XSProject. We continue to plan better facilities for them like installing computers so the children can study more efficiently.

We hope we can continue to enhance the activities for the children whilst also hoping the situation will improve soon.
