Following up on our report on Oct 5th, 2018 with title ‘From Hope to Reality’ . Our college students are really excited about being college kids and getting the opportunity to open up their horizons.
When Sari decided to continue her studies after graduating from her vocational school (equivalent to HS) 3 years ago, XSProject never dreamed of having the trash picker’s children going to college. Six more students today also never dreamed of attending college and following Sari footsteps. We will have 2 more this coming new school year.
No doubt that these 7 college students are inspiring their siblings and other younger children at the community. Being a college student means more responsibility, being independent and setting an example. They are expected to give back to the community, both by working to earn pocket money and they are also expected to help the younger children in the community with school work, since the parents have limited education.
They work to earn income for their transport and pocket money by giving tutorials to their younger sibling and younger community children in the afternoon, or cleaning the facilities.
During school breaks, they also work as an intern at XSProject and also help sell XSPrpject products.
Being college students, means they have more opportunities to learn outside the class. Like learning and practicing English with XS expat volunteers and supervising the younger kids when they go for outings. They also have the opportunity to join campus student activities, exploring museums and taking art class. Not only does this open their eyes to a new world, it also raises their self-respect. Although they grew up as trash-pickers, they are now college students.
Your continuous donations through GlobalGiving will give more opportunities to these college students to pursue their dreams and to inspire their siblings and other younger children to be like them.
