Ghana Shanty Vicky, also known as Ms. Vicky or Bu Vicky to the children at the Cirendu community, is a teacher and tutor for students in XSProject’s XSEducation program.
From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she can be found teaching pre-grade one classes at Cirendu. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., she makes herself available as a tutor for grade levels one through five, for any students who may be struggling with their homework.
Teaching is Bu Vicky’s passion. After completing her degree at a vocational school, Bu Vicky moved on to study education at a university, with the dream of becoming a primary school teacher. Although she has the credentials and the opportunities to teach at much more prestigious schools, she finds working at the Cirendu community to be extremely fulfilling.
She looks at the job not just as a means of income, but as a source of personal gratification – especially when she sees how her work contributes to the students’ growth and development. Seeing the students build a sense of responsibility, show respect, socialize with others and learn the skills they need to improve their quality of life, is her ultimate reward.
Bu Vicky adheres to the Indonesian Department of Education’s guidelines, and she prepares her class material using the government’s curriculum. This ensures that her students experience the same level of learning, with equal access to edcuational material, as other children across the region.
After a year in pre-grade one, Bu Vicky determines which students can advance to grade one, based on their cognitive development and readiness to be in grade level school. The success rate of her students moving onto grade one after one year is about 90%.
To the 85 children in Cirendu, and their families, Bu Vicky is looked at as not just a teacher, but also as a friend, a sister, and even as a parental figure. At 37 years old, with two children of her own, Bu. Vicky opens her heart to the entire community, treating others like they were her own family.
From time to time, Bu Vicky visits her students’ houses to get to know them and her families. She likes to try to understand what difficulties they may be facing, not just related to schoolwork, but also related to their health and personal lives. Sharing advice and helping her students be their best selves is highly important to her, and her support has been welcomed by parents with excitement and enthusiasm.
In addition to teaching and tutoring, Bu Vicky has contributed to the community in countless other ways, including handling the college application process for three of the community’s students. She also drives the childrens’ health program, buying and distributing medicine and health supplements, and taking the children to the hospital for check ups.
Bu Vicky’s generosity and kindness makes her an inspiration to the community and beyond. Without her efforts, the XSEducation program would not be what it is today.
