These are challenging times - everyone is experiencing tough economic, social and political realities. In Kisumu, the current economic downturn is the harshest for those who were already vulnerable and left struggling as a result of the pandemic, which derailed the academic journey of many students. RKF's main aim is to ensure school children always have access to hot meals, books and learning material and good quality education by working closely with families living in marginalized communities

Challenge

Africa is currently facing its worst hunger crisis with over 160 million people going hungry. Kenya is one of the many countries grappling with this alarming issue. In Kenya, the current economic downturn is the harshest for those who were already vulnerable and left struggling as a result of the pandemic. Children living in marginalized communities are some of the worst-hit; no access to meals or educational material are two of the biggest concerns that could derail their education journeys.

Solution

Team RKF will make food, educational material and sanitary pad kits available to students across eight different communities. We will also support families with meal kits and income-generating activities to help them sustain their needs. We believe this will create stability in the lives of school-going children and help them stay on their education journeys that will help them break out of generational poverty. We will also support high-performing, disadvantaged students through scholarships.

Long-Term Impact

The project will impact nearly 4,800 students and their families (approx. 20,000 community members) by supporting them with school meals and food packs. We hope to serve a cumulative total of 1,000,000 meals by the end of 2024. Each community will be able to ensure students have access to meals and the necessary learning material to excel in their education journey for generations to come.
