Exams and Scholarships

Dear Donor,

Greetings from rainy Kisumu!

Thank you so much for your continued support to our project! In our last report we shared an update from our Meals Program, a story from a parent, Joyce, who is a beneficiary of the Meal Kits and shared our intention to support students with stationery for their KCPE exams.

In this report, we share an update of the above mentioned support during KCPE exams and our newly launched Scholarship Fund. We also share with you a success story from one of our schools through their head teacher, Millicent. This year again, we celebrate the 6 GlobalGiving Badges Team RKF received at the start of this year.

KCPE Support

As we had shared in our last report (which you can read here), we had pledged to assist the students of Central Primary with stationery. We were able to support 60 vulnerable students with geometrical sets and clip boards for their KCPE exams. We are also happy to report that some of the students who we were able to support performed exceptionally, with two students, Clinton (scored 395) and Mary (scored 366) being selected to go to National level high schools. Mary also became one of the first recipients of RKF’s Scholarships and is now attending Moi Girls School in Nairobi. We will be sharing her story in a future report, so keep an eye out.

Scholarship Fund

When we started our organization in 2016, our focus was to ensure students could access early education so that they were set up for a strong academic journey. Over the years, we have learnt of the various obstacles that many students living in marginalized communities face. One of the biggest obstacles is school fees to attend a good secondary school (preferably boarding) after completing their primary level education. After a lot of ground work over the past year, this year we were able to launch the Scholarship Fund with the support of some private donors and your donations to support 4 students for the next four years of their secondary school education. We are so excited for their futures and the impact of this program. We hope to share our scholars’ profiles and more details about this program in the coming months.

Empowering Communities – Teacher Millicent’s Story

Meet Teacher Millicent, the head of SHAMCO ECD Centre in Molem, Kisumu County. RKF started working with Teacher Millicent and the SHAMCO community in early 2019 to make daily school meals available to the young students attending her school. At the time we started, most children went hungry throughout the day if their parents were unable to send a packed lunch.

We started a Meals Program through which students at SHAMCO received two hot meals a day: uji (Kenyan porridge) for breakfast and rice and green grams for lunch. This program started as a free program, and then later progressed into a cost-sharing program where parents chipped in a small amount of money and became active participants. The program continued to run smoothly until the pandemic forced schools to close abruptly in March 2020. RKF continued to support the community through Meal Kits during the pandemic.

In 2022, this is what Teacher Millicent shared:

"When we started working with the Foundation, we did not have a food program in our school. But by working with them, I learnt how to organize and budget for a food program for the children in my school and I started to see the parents in our community getting involved. So when we returned to school after lockdown, we decided to take over the program entirely and run it ourselves. As a community we came together and despite some cash flow challenges we face occasionally, we are running the program week-after-week on our own."

As Team RKF, we could not be happier to watch this community stand on its own feet and run the program on their own. We continue to cheer Teacher Millicent and the SHAMCO community as they grown from strength to strength.

GlobalGiving Badges

Every year, GlobalGiving awards different badges to non-profits on its platform. These badges are trust indicators that give you, the donor, an insight into how our non-profit is performing and being perceived on the platform. We are thrilled to share that for the 4th year in a row, we are one of a select few organizations that has received all six badges on offer by GlobalGiving.

These badges are awarded to non-profits to recognize their efforts in different areas. RKF has received badges for being a top-ranked, highly effective and vetted organization. We are also site-visit verified which means a member of the GlobalGiving team has visited our projects and verified the work we are doing. We were also selected as a Staff Favourite and Project of the Month!
