By Julius Muchiri | Beneficiary
My name is Julius, 23 years old. I was born in a village called Kanderendu in central Kenya. My siblings and I had a normal family life as village kids until I lost my dad in 2000. I was 6 years then and was just about to start my primary education. Life stopped for a while. My mum struggled to feed us. I had to stay home for one year without having any hope of going to school. I admired other kids who let home every morning to school and came back home in the evening. I did abit of work at home like fetching water and firewood to helpmy mum. My mum got casual jobs, she toiled hard and managed to pay for my class one school fee. It was fun to join other kids in schools. Things dint work out so well. I was sent home for fees many time. This affected my studies a lot. I felt bad but all I could do was wait for mum to get some money.
In 2008 things changed when the government introduced free education.I managed to continue with my education together with my 3 siblings. Mum continued to work hard to feed us. I completed my primary education and sat for my final exams. I pased well. But then the worst happened. My mum got ill and passed away.. This was very deverstating. At that tender age, I was left an orphan with 3 siblings to take care of. As the first born, they looked up on me to deliver. I felt a lot of weight on my shoulders. I felt confused and defeated. My hope and meaning in life was loft. I had no option but to drop out of school and stay at home. without knowing my next step. After a few month I decided to go back to class 8 since primary school was free.
The year was tough but I persevered. I studied very hard despite hardship at home. I sat for final exams and again passed very well. I got stuck again with my seconday school fees. I looked for help frommany places including our then area MP but nothing was promising. Through a local teacher,I got a sponsorship from sport for change. Things changed for me. I dint have to worry about my secondary school fees. I lived with my uncle over school holiday. I attended all sports for change movitational and leadership camps. This restored my hope and dream. I met other very needy kids. We shared our life stories and encouraged each other. We become one big family. After four years I sat for my secondary school final exams. I passed well and chose to do diploma in high way engineering. Sports for change continued to support me until last year when I completed my course. Iam really looking forward to my graduation day.
For the time being,Iam looking for a job. I would wish to continue with my education to learn more skills. My biggest dream is to start my own construction company. I want to help others by creating employment.
I can't imagine how my life would be if Sports For Change dint sponsor my education. I can't thank them enough. And to you who believe in their course and donate, You brightened my future. A mllion words can nor explain my gratitude to you.
