Meet Purity Wanjiku, an 18-year-old girl with a beautiful smile and zeal for life. She lives in a small tin house; with no electricity, with her mother and two-year-old brother. Their home is located in a place called Gataka an urban slum near Karen estate.. Her mother is an alcoholic who has on many drunken occasions ended up sleeping on the streets, and is un able to take care of her and her two siblings. She had been previously taken into a children’s home together with her older brother, who were educating them. She however faced mistreatment at the home and ended up running away back home to her alcoholic mother. She thus had to drop out of school, and has already missed two terms(semesters). She has been helping the mother by fetching and selling water to feed them, as well as maintaining their house. During our visit, her 3 years old brother had been admitted to hospital and her mother was with him.
As we speak to her, she is all smiles, happy at a second chance in life. She will be resuming school to form three next week. Purity dreams of one day becoming a doctor. Her final words; “I will not disappoint”.
Purity was introduced to Sports for Change by the organization called ‘Woman’s Hope’. They discovered her through a mentorship program held by the organization targeting girls and young women in the area. She is has joined Sports For Change family. Her initial school fees was donated by Asenati’s birthday fundraiser. Asenati is one of our supporters who came across our organization on facebook. She dedicated her 40th birthday to touch a life of two young girls who had lost hope. The gift she gave will benefit generations to come. What a way to celebrate a big birthday and give a gift for education !
We say big thank you to all her friends who came together to celebrate her.
