My final year in secondary school has been full of challenges. In a normal year, this would be sitting for my last papers, eager to start a new life. But due to Covid, schools in Kenya were closed in March, I ended up staying home for 7 months. We re-opened school in Oct. I was happy to be back in school. I was loosing hope at home. A lot of youth especially girls got into bad influence and good pregnant. It is sad to witness young promising life getting destroyed.
Life at home was hard. It was not easy to balance my studies and help my mother in her work. My life in a boarding school is easier and better than at home. We feed at school and my sponsors pay for everything. At home, food is not guaranteed. My mother is a casual laborer in a tea farm. For her to feed us (my two siblings and I) We help her in picking tea and get paid. She has a small one room house in the farm where we call home. She recently changed her employer. That meant we had to move homes. In the midst of all this, I studied hard preparing for my final exam. I know education will help me in future. My dream is to become a doctor. I want to help my family and the community at large. Iam so grateful to sports for change for supporting my education for the last 4 year. I got overwhelmed with joy when the founder and other members visited me in school this week. This to me was something big. It shown love and kindness. I felt very lucky .
Covid has changed a lot of things in our school. We got distributed in different classes to help with social distancing. We got new teachers. It is hard to adapt to the new different way of living at home and then in school. I like and appreciate that we wash hands all the time. Wearing masks all the time is very tiresome but it has reduced infections of other diseases.
I have l learned a lot during this pandemic year. I appreciate my life more. I appreciate my family, my friends and the small house we call home. Iam healthy and Iam surrounded by people who love and care. I appreciate the fact that Iam in one of the best schools in Kenya and I rub shoulders with rich kids. Sports for change has given me a chance to use my academic good grades to get a higher place in school and in life.
Parents can give their kids a lot of pocket money to make them feel good, but they can't give them marks to defeat me. Iam a hard worker and in the end I will emerge stronger. I don't watch tv at home, we don't have one. I soak myself in books during my free times.
"The greatest gift you will give us is a good grade." This are words from sports for change founder. Our final exam will be in March and I look forward to make her and everyone else proud.
I thank Sports for change for the support and love they have given me. Iam hopeful because they welcomed me in their family. I look forward to my next phase in life.
I wish all sports for change members and supporters a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
