We had a special occasion organized by one of our students , Lllian, Her family, sports for change family, students and friends. attended. Lilian’s father had put everything on hold with one purpose, to drive for more than 5 hours to visit my family, in our village. The aim was to celebrate his daughter's education progress with us. Accompanied by one of his wives and Mt. Suswa Community guide and friends, they brought two sheep and helped our friends from the village to slaughter them. They came dressed in their traditional clothes and made the function so colorful.
I love Maasai attire and I grab every opportunity to dress in one We ate, laughed and celebrated together with alot of love. Lilian is now in Nazarene university, second year first semester pursing bachelor of commerce. She is the first girl in her village to progress this far. We can’t wait for her graduation. It will be BIG. ‘This girl would be married with many children if Sports for Change dint not sponsor her education. Maasai girls get married very early.” Said the guide who connected us with Lilian 6 years ago.
We met Lilian when we went hiking in Mt. Suswa , very close to her village, which is inside a crater. Our guide, Jeremiah, told us of a bright girl who had not joined school for lack of school fees. He said she risked been married off. We acted fast, visited her family to discussed our mission, got her a school and arranged her reporting day.
This was our first student to support in her community. Her family was suspicious but decided to give it a shot. Six years down the line, we have supported a lot of deserving students from her community, earned a lot of trust and respect from her family and the community at large.
“ I can not thank sports for change enough. They are like our second family. We visited Shiku’s family to show our gratitude to her organization. They have helped our daughter achieve her dream . She is now an inspiration to the young girls in the community. We look forward to her graduation and service to the community and the world.’ said Lilian’s father. I
I was touched and very humbled by this gesture. We support our students without expecting anything. Our hope is that once they start earning, they will support other needy students and keep our ripple of kindness going. But Lilian’s father like to say, “Jesus healed ten men and only one of them went back to give thanks."
special thanks to Dean Pritchard and his family for the love, kindness and generosity . This amazing family have supported Lilian and other Sports for change girls whole heartedly. They have touched hearts and changed lives
