When Sofia came to SUPERARSE, pain and sadness were the only things that her eyes reflected. Her history was simply heartbreaking. Sofía, at only 11 years old, like many of our girls, was taken from a home that, instead of protecting and caring for her, ended her innocence and took away the possibility of being what she was, a girl.
She was exposed to psychoactive substances and alcohol since her mother's pregnancy, yet she managed to be born healthy and willing to continue fighting. But her life would continue to test her, with abuse and mistreatment by her mother and some of her changing “stepparents.”
Sofía, like many girls, did not understand why she was being separated from her home, she cried and did not understand reasons, the world of pain was the only thing she knew. Some time later she understood that she had been rescued, when the abuse and mistreatment stopped, the illusion of her appeared in her eyes, deep down, she seemed to shine for a short moment.
When Sofia entered the doors of her new home in Superarse for the first time, she seemed curious but somewhat cautious.
But when we receive Sofía at Superarse, we feel the same emotion as when a new boy or girl arrives. We know that we will do everything in our power to transform her life, to make those sad eyes shine again full of hope.
Sofia's case, like that of many girls in Colombia, hurts us immensely. More than 4,000 abuses per year are reported in Colombia, in girls under 14 years of age who experience unwanted pregnancies, "sold" into forced marriages with older men, displacement or abandonment from home due to physical and other abuse.
HELP US SAVE THEM, Support a recurring donation to give the opportunity for safe housing and education to more than 60 girls per year.
