1 Sleeping Bag for 1 Life

As summer slowly comes to an end in Nepal, we are once again looking ahead to the harsh winter months.

For many families living in poverty, winter is not simply uncomfortable. It can be dangerous.

Every year, through our “One Sleeping Bag for One Life” initiative, Bahini Educare Foundation distributes warm sleeping bags to vulnerable single women, children, elderly people, and families living in extremely difficult conditions. A good sleeping bag can provide warmth, protection, and, in some cases, quite literally save a life.

With winter only around two months away, this is the time when we need to begin raising funds and preparing for the coming season. Our hope is to reach as many vulnerable people as possible before temperatures begin to fall.

However, Nepal is currently facing another unimaginable humanitarian crisis.

In recent days, devastating floods have caused enormous loss of life and destruction across parts of the country. Hundreds have been confirmed dead, thousands remain missing, and many more families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security. Rescue and relief operations are still ongoing, and the full scale of the disaster is continuing to unfold.

Naturally, we are closely following the situation and considering how Bahini Educare Foundation can provide meaningful support.

At the same time, we also believe that humanitarian assistance must be thoughtful and responsible.

Our organization is based in Pokhara, quite far from some of the worst-affected areas. Any intervention would involve significant travel, transportation, and logistical costs. Before mobilizing resources, we want to ensure that every possible contribution creates the greatest possible impact and reaches those who genuinely need it.

We are therefore monitoring the situation closely, consulting relevant authorities and partners, and waiting for clearer assessments, policies, and guidance regarding the emerging needs on the ground. The Government of Nepal has stated that search, rescue, relief, and damage assessment remain ongoing, with needs continuing to evolve.

The immediate demand is understandably for rescue and emergency relief. But experience tells us that the difficult days often continue long after the headlines disappear.

Thousands of displaced families may soon face the challenge of rebuilding their lives, while winter is rapidly approaching.

A sleeping bag is practical, easy to transport, durable, and immediately useful for families living in temporary shelters, damaged homes, or areas without adequate protection from the cold.

Should there be a clear and appropriate need, we are prepared to explore how the funds raised through this initiative can help provide warmth and protection to vulnerable people affected by the crisis, while continuing our original commitment to support poor and marginalized families during the coming winter.
