Growing from the Roots: Discovering New Possibilities with Children

What happens to learning when summer begins?

Today, we want to share a reflection from a volunteer who joined Teach For Taiwan’s Summer Tomorrow School — someone who chose to spend their summer walking alongside children in rural Taiwan.

For many children, summer is a time of rest.
But in rural communities, it is often the longest interruption to learning.

Through Teach For Taiwan’s Summer Tomorrow School, we continued responding to this challenge—inviting volunteers and alumni to partner with rural elementary schools and create learning experiences tailored to their needs.

We spent six weeks in the Hengchun Peninsula, working alongside three schools. Through cultural identity courses, AI and digital storytelling lessons, and social-emotional learning(SEL), children practiced empathy, creativity, collaboration, and confidence.

Looking back, we continue to see how those weeks planted seeds that are still growing.

 

“No One in This Classroom Was Left Behind.”

During the camp, TFT alumni served as mentors and coordinators, supporting university volunteers in teaching and leadership.

Each evening, volunteers gathered in reflection circles—processing what they had observed, sharing emotions, and learning how to better respond to children’s needs. This intentional space created a powerful cycle: when adults learn to support one another, they become more attentive to the children they serve.

Even on challenging days, we held firmly to one belief:
No one in this classroom would be left behind.

 

“Every Behavior Deserved to Be Seen with Gentle Eyes.”

There were moments that stayed with us long after camp ended.

One evening, volunteers found a child lingering alone in an alley. When asked why he wasn’t home, he quietly said, “There’s no one at my house.”

Another volunteer patiently stayed beside a child who struggled to finish his worksheet, gently saying, “I’ll stay with you. Let’s finish this slowly.” Through that steady presence, trust began to form.

These moments reminded us that learning is never only academic.
Behind every behavior is a story—and sometimes, what a child needs most is simply someone willing to stay.

 

When Land Became the Classroom

Throughout the camp, learning extended beyond walls.

In coastal Daguang, children interviewed local residents about marine energy.
In Danlu, students designed tribal tours rooted in Paiwan culture.
At the Innovation Base, children explored local history and agricultural traditions through drama and field investigation.

As children spoke proudly about their villages, ancestral stories, and cultural roots, something meaningful unfolded.

They were not only learning about their hometowns.
They were strengthening their sense of identity.

And for the volunteers, these immersive experiences deepened their understanding of community and culture—lessons that continue to shape their approach to education today.

 

When People Choose to Come Together

Looking back, what made that summer possible was not only curriculum or logistics.

It was willingness.

Willingness from volunteers to step into unfamiliar communities.
Willingness from schools to open their doors.
Willingness from children to try, trust, and grow.

Because of that collective willingness, we were able to create moments that continue to ripple outward—into classrooms, communities, and futures still unfolding.
