This project will give essential supplies to help support a girl in rural Tanzania to complete her education in safety and comfort. Since 2012 Lyra has built 11 hostels, housing over 1,000 girls per year. Our Christmas appeal aims to give small gifts directly to the girls in Lyra hostels, helping to make their learning and living environment more comfortable, and to extend the learning equipment they have available. We need your help to give them the much-needed gift of Joy this Christmas.
There is a need for girls hostels in rural schools in Tanzania. Girls often walk long distances, or rent a room near the school, and are vulnerable to sexual harassment and early pregnancy which jeopardises their education and future prospects. Our model is to build eco-friendly, innovative low-carbon hostels for girls in government ward secondary schools. We invest in girls' education - every girl deserves to be in school. And educated girls create prosperous communities.
Girls in rural Tanzania face so many challenges, but we are determined to empower them to create a better future. To do this, we need to keep girls in education, with the right tools and basic supplies to keep them nourished, and cloth and feed them - which includes access to clean drinking water, school uniform, food, blankets and bedding. In addition, by providing computer labs in the schools, we can give more students access to technology to learn,
The project will help us support another 1,000 girls safely through secondary school, keeping them comfortable and nourished. In the long-term this will empower them to complete their education, and to help them grow a more sustainable and prosperous future for themselves, their families and the rural community as a whole.
