We support 1,000 blind and deafblind people in North Kivu, DRC, by providing white canes and mobility training. Through identification, distribution, and follow-up support, we help children and adults move safely, access school and health services, and participate fully in community life. This project brings dignity, independence, and hope to those who have lived too long in isolation.
Over 1400 blind and deafblind people in North Kivu live in extreme poverty without access to white canes or mobility training. Without this basic tool, children and adults cannot walk safely, attend school, reach clinics, or navigate conflict-affected neighborhoods. Isolation grows, and families keep them inside out of fear. Their disability becomes a barrier far greater than it should be.
We will identify 1,000 blind and deafblind people, distribute high-quality white canes, and provide hands-on training for safe mobility. Follow-up visits will assess progress and ensure proper use. With a simple cane and practical guidance, beneficiaries gain independence, access school and health services, and participate in daily life with confidence and dignity.
Receiving a white cane opens lifelong opportunities. Children can attend school, adults can travel safely, and families experience less fear and dependency. Over time, increased mobility leads to education, employment, and community inclusion breaking the cycle of poverty for people with disabilities and strengthening long-term social participation in North Kivu.
