The money you donate here is added to a FarmWallet and used to subsidize seeds to smallholder women farmers of Binde in the South-Central region of Burkina Faso. This also provides training on the production of solid and liquid compost to improve food security through regenerative agriculture, with an emphasis on community-based, participatory methods. Through this program, women are organized into agricultural cooperatives to give them more bargaining power.
The World Bank estimates that 40% of farmers in Burkina Faso remain below the poverty line, and women are the most impacted because they don't have access to land and agricultural inputs. Due to the lack of access to quality seeds, natural compost, and proper training on environmentally sustainable farming, smallholder farmers harvest less than a ton of crops per hectare and live on less than $1.90 a day.They are unfamiliar with the proper use of pesticides and expose people and the environment.
This project provides an alternative farming approach that can ensure food security locally, counteract poverty and degradation while benefiting the environment. We teach better farming techniques and provide farmers with organic seeds and seedlings to grow trees that can be used to produce organic pesticides. While helping farmers increase their productivity and income, we are caring for the environment.
We will help restore degraded land, improve and vitalize soil health, and equip farmers to face climate change. This will increase agricultural yield and income by 40% or more per farmer, and create a pathway out of poverty. It's a startling pair of statistics that 90% of income earned by women is reinvested into families & communities. For instance, this will allow them better nutrition and access to healthcare for their families.
