Kidsave's Weekend Miracles gives older foster youth (ages 9-17) in Los Angeles County the chance to get to know host families through weekends spent together. The goal is a lifelong, connected, caring relationship with at least one safe, stable adult for each youth (adoption, guardianship or mentorship). Monthly events introduce kids to people interested in getting to know them. Kidsave's weekend hosts make a one-year commitment to have the child in their homes at least two weekends a month.
As of 2022, there are over 27,000 kids in foster care in LA County. And each year, more than 1,000 kids exit this system, alone and without family or adult support. Through no fault of their own, these kids find themselves growing up in a system that was never designed to be a permanent solution. As a result, these children are more likely to become homeless, incarcerated, and dropout of school.
Kidsave introduces them to potential adoptive families enabling families to meet kids who are otherwise hidden from view. These new adults in their lives help them with school and engage them in the community. Best of all, the kids meet people who are interested in adopting and mentoring older kids - leading to permanent families and connections to caring adults.
Since the program began in late 2005, 293 older Los Angeles County foster youth have been referred to the Kidsave Weekend Miracle program and 77% of actively participating youth (227) have been matched for adoption, guardianship, or a lasting connection with a stable adult.
