Our Youth Associations bring together young people, aged 15-24, who aren't able to return home or to a family environment, and gives them the opportunity to learn new skills and empower each other to move away from a life on the streets. Your support will help us set up 10 new Youth Association groups - so they can learn trades and life skills that allow them to build a stable income and support themselves long-term, providing a sustainable, brighter future for themselves.
Every year, thousands of children in Tanzania leave for the streets. Some are fleeing abuse and neglect, but many are simply leaving in search of a better life. On the streets, they only find violence and abuse, and often use harmful substances to cope. For safety, youths who have been on the streets for a long time often group together, which results in further dangers like drug use, violence and conflict with the police - a life that is very difficult to break free from once on the streets.
For older children and young people (aged 15-24) who have been on the streets for a long time, returning home is not always desirable or possible. Our Youth Associations give them the opportunity to work with other young people in similar situations. Together they learn life skills such as literacy, budgeting, health and youth rights, as well as trade skills in order to access apprenticeships or set up their own business, to create a more sustainable, brighter future for themselves.
These skills allow young people to build a sustainable income for themselves long-term, allowing them to access housing and new opportunities. But many young people who have been through our Youth Associations go on to give back and help those following in their footsteps Some get involved in outreach to other young people still living and working on the streets, others support Youth Associations that are just starting up. In this way, the impact goes on long after the project has ended.
