Having to say Goodbye

By Gudrun Olaya | Project Leader

Dear donor and friend. We recently lost four of our shelter members, due to old age. That was the hardest month we  ever experienced. It was as if they had agreed to pass in a row; they left us one after the other, silently, in harmony with themselves and with each other. As there is an extra space in the shelter for our senior dogs with special needs, all the members are closely connected and they are surrounded by an aura of calm and peace. Uncle Tom was the first to leave, it was a totally unexpected passing, no sign of illness. We rushed to say goodbye, grateful for the years he spent with us, grateful at the same time for now being able to rescue 17 years old Leona from her terrible condition as a stray. She lived in a pasture on the side of the road, with a limited eyesight, almost deaf and senile. It was time for her to change this life for good, thanks to our wise buddy Uncle Tom. That day was the last time was saw Rocky and DaVinci alive. DaVinci, in an advanced stage of dementia, followed Uncle Tom one week later, slowly fading, but knowing exactly, where to go. Rocky´s passing was a real shock for everyone, he did not present any symptoms, just went to bed and never woke up again. We lost the icon of our village, our beloved friend, master and son. The final blow was Leona´s death, she hasn´t been ill either, and the day before we visited her and she was fine, radiant and always in the first line to ask for cookies. It was devastating, and we are still grieving, they are all missed deeply, but at the same time we are glad that we could change their last years, months and weeks into a beautiful new life experience, so that they could pass peacefully and with good memories.
