Challenge

American overseas surviving domestic violence lack national and international recognition. Because of this, many survivors feel that they have no one to turn to and feel trapped to remain in an abusive relationship in a foreign country. The Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center offers a continuum of services to this population, through an international toll free crisis line, including danger to safety relocation, long term case management, legal assistance, and counseling.

Solution

The Global Empowerment Campaign sends educators around the globe, educating the local service providers and training outreach ambassadors. The ambassadors commit to two years of voluntary service, conducting an outreach activity every 3 months.

Long-Term Impact

This project creates a snowball effect, reaching thousands of Americans overseas. The pilot project launched in October of 2009 in 6 European countries. Crisis line calls have increased approximately 200% as the direct result of the Global Campaign.
