Driving Awareness and Raising Funds

By Melissa Martin | Community Project Coordinator

Bula Supporters,

July and August proved to be productive with staff and volunteers working hard to install two concrete bases for 10,000L water tanks to be placed upon in the villages of Uluibau and Yanuca. However from September to December 2017 an outbreak of Typhoid Fever and Leptospirosis caused GVI’s project to be somewhat limited following guidelines and restrictions placed by the Fiji Ministry of Health on movement between the islands. This event further highlights the importance of the project over on Moturiki, and for the past quarter we have focused on continuing our needs assessments for the community with regards to rainwater harvesting and WaSH.

Despite this, our staff were able to assist with WaSH workshops in the villages alongside the Ministry of Health and we decided to organize a fundraising event to support the construction of compost toilets and provision of WaSH resources for the communities of Moturiki. The Ministry of Health advised that concrete bases, education and compost toilets are the key components of a long-term solution to help prevent the re-occurrence and spread of such illnesses in the future.

To drive awareness and raise funds, the team organized a Swim Around the Island; “Swim Against Typhoid” in December 2017. This event was a huge success where 28 volunteers, staff and local members of the community swam around the entire Caqalai Island. This feat takes around 2 hours, and an initial goal of raising at least $3500 USD was set to get a jump start on installing compost toilets on the worst affected villages. The fundraiser was well supported, and the goal was quickly beaten, ultimately raising over $3800 USD. We are so excited to get moving on these improvements to support local communities in improving access to proper water and sanitation in 2018. All 10 villages of Moturiki have already attended an initial compost toilet workshop outlining the benefits and basics of compost toilets. Alongside installation of the toilets, we will also be doing workshops appointing and training those responsible for maintaining the toilets on a regular basis.

Thank you so much for all your support in 2017!

With Gratitude,

Fiji
