This project will build secure yards and TuffSheds for our Livestock Guardian Dogs. Funds from this project will also provide on-going veterinary care, food and enrichment items for our Guardians.
Our sanctuary is located in a very rural part of San Diego County with a healthy population of both coyotes and mountain lions. Since Stanley, our first LGD arrived in March of 2012 (cross the Rainbow Bridge on Dec. 26, 2018), livestock guardians have served the critical role of maintaining the safety of our ranch residents. In April 2023, County of San Diego Department of Animal Services made us aware of three Great Pyrenees that needed a rescue exit from the shelter.
These dogs need a stable, calm environment that will allow them to bond with people. Garda, Dealla and Cahira are part of a group of Great Pyrenees dumped on Palomar Mountain. Livestock Guardians, especially Great Pyrenees, are escape artists with very poor recall. Our original dog yard immediately proved in adequate for the new Livestock Guardians. A secure yard and a 10 by 12 Tuff Shed "Dog House" will provide the newest Livestock Guardians with the secure, appropriate housing they need.
This project will provide our Livestock Guardians with secure yards and an all-weather house. The project will also fund their on-going food, veterinary care and enrichment.
