This project provides personal care, social support, and recreation to aging Kenyans in rural villages that lack running water, electricity, and basic medical services. Your donation will provide this neglected population with the resources to battle nutritional deficiencies; diseases and pandemics like COVID-19, malaria, and TB; and ensure that our rural elders receive care close to their home -- allowing them to age gracefully and preventing their untimely death.
In Kenya, many elderly people live in villages that lack running water, electricity, and basic medical services. They were left behind by their adult children who moved to the city in search of educational opportunities and a stable career. Without their family for support, even the simplest daily tasks - like cooking a meal or bathing - become increasingly difficult. Today, this vulnerable population is under an even greater threat - COVID-19.
AgeWatch provides a complete continuum of care for aging, rural Kenyans including daycare programs offered in the village gazebo, individualized home care programs that are designed to meet the needs of the homebound, and a complete residential care facility for seniors that are unable to care for themselves. Our programs are led by trained caregivers and provide the elderly with opportunities to socialize --improving their physical condition and quality of life.
Our goal is to provide all 8,600 rural Kenyans in Kisumu West Sub-County with the care that they need. In the future (and with your help), we hope to expand our program to other sub-counties ensuring that older adults have access to personal care services and the ability to socialize with neighbors instead of living a lonely, neglected life at home alone. We know that by caring for our seniors, we can improve our community and intend to share the results of our program with others.
