Aladina Foundation Report on the Grants for Oncology MED Students Program
Program Description
At the Aladina Foundation, we are deeply committed to fostering the potential of young medical professionals eager to specialize in Pediatric Onco-Hematology. For several years, we have funded scholarships at various hospitals, enabling these talented individuals to continue working in pediatric units while expanding and enhancing their training. This initiative underscores our commitment to developing the next generation of specialists who will advance pediatric cancer care.
Program Impact
In 2022, six "Aladina Grants" were awarded to promising young oncologists chosen by the heads of Oncology Services. These grants enable recipients to extend their training by an additional year, significantly impacting their professional futures by allowing them to gain further specialization in the field. This additional training not only enhances their career prospects but also improves the quality of care provided to the children under Aladina’s care, ensuring these young patients receive the best possible medical attention.
Results and Achievements
This past year marked a significant milestone as we awarded scholarships to six dedicated medical doctors. In 2023, we inreased this number to eight, and we are ambitious to continue this growth trajectory into 2025 and beyond. Each scholarship represents a step forward in providing young oncologists with the comprehensive training they need, directly translating into improved patient care within our network of affiliated hospitals.
Challenges and Solutions
Our primary challenge has consistently been securing sufficient funding and finding effective communication channels. The scholarships for young oncologists are financed through our "Bandana Challenge" program in schools, which raises awareness among students across Spain about the challenges faced by children with cancer and the importance of solidarity. The "Bandana Challenge" involves a "Day with a Bandana," where students wear a bandana on their heads for a day, emulating our brave little warriors. This event is ideally held on February 15, World Childhood Cancer Day, although schools are welcome to participate at any time. Students are encouraged to draw a bandana or write a supportive message for teens with cancer on a template provided by the Aladina Foundation. Families are then encouraged to make a voluntary financial contribution to support this initiative.
Future Steps
Our scholarship program for young oncologists will continue to expand each year, extending also to other healthcare professionals, such as nurses. In 2024, for the first time, we awarded a scholarship to a nurse, allowing her to further her training for an additional year. This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing the educational opportunities for all healthcare professionals involved in pediatric cancer care, ultimately leading to better outcomes for our patients.
