Challenge

Over 80% of the population in rural Mukono depends on firewood and charcoal for their fuel and livelihood which has contributed to massive deforestation due to the excessive use of fuel wood resources, encroachment on wetlands and disrupting the ecosystem. Forests have been under strain due to unsustainable agriculture practices and massive industrialization of Mukono with trees supplying essentials like firewood and charcoal which is driving deforestation contributing to the climate crisis.

Solution

The project will establish community tree nurseries with participating farmers. Organizing +625 farmers in groups of 25, will create 25 groups. Each farmer group will establish 30,000 tree seedlings of different tree species in their nurseries to distribute to members with each participating farmer using at least 1 ha of their land. When the +625 farmers each plants 1,200 trees, we shall then easily plant and reach the numbers of trees we need.

Long-Term Impact

Greening bare communities contributes to climate change mitigation, generates a source of income for farmers and their families and and promotes food security through planting of fruit trees. It promotes fodder production for livestock, Firewood production by reducing dependency on existing forests, Improve soil quality through forestry tree planting practices, Protecting farmers land through boundary tree planting, Protecting and reintroducing endangered species in the planting areas.
