Challenge

Greyston serves a diverse community in Southwest Yonkers with high rates of inter-generational poverty and unemployment, and a forced generational reliance on government support for income, housing and medical care. Our constituents are the most vulnerable individuals who are often excluded from the mainstream economy due to a criminal history, low educational attainment, low or no job skills, mental illness, language barriers, and lack of work history.

Solution

Greyston's mission is to create thriving communities through the practice and promotion of Open Hiring. We fight for inclusion by creating employment opportunities for disenfranchised people. This project aims to overcome systemic inequities by leveling the playing field for people who want to work, by supporting them through job-skills training, financial assistance and addressing the fundamental issue of food security, and educating employers on Open Hiring - creating jobs.

Long-Term Impact

This project will create 10 jobs by transforming common hiring practices and opening up opportunities. This project will provide 25 individuals with skills and certifications employers seek, allowing them to rise out of systemic poverty. Supporting individuals with finding and keeping a job, will create a thriving community by leveling the field of access to employment and makes the economy of Southwest Yonkers more inclusive to people previously excluded.
