Grow Resilience is Urban Harvest's strategy to respond to COVID-19 and ensure all Houstonians stay healthy, active & nutritiously fed. With your support, we will sustain the largest farmers market in our region including 110 hard-hit local farms & small businesses while offering a safe way for community members to access food; reach 19,500 Houstonians with organic gardening and nutrition education at no cost, and match SNAP benefits dollar-for-dollar on fresh produce at farmers markets citywide.
In the US, the rate of food insecurity for households with children increased from 13.6 in 2019 to 14.8 percent in 2020. Today, there is a need for resilient individuals, communities, and cities to address our growing health, economic, and environmental imbalances. Urban Harvest brings healthy food choices to food-desert neighborhoods through a Mobile Market, Community Gardens, and Education. With your support, we can grow resilience in communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.
Urban Harvest is solving food insecurity by bolstering not only local farms and gardens growing sustainable fruits and vegetables, but also all Houstonians. Access to fresh, healthy food and safe, outdoor green space has never been more important. Our "Grow Resilience" it's a win-win-win strategy to provide resources, education, and affordable food choices to those who need it most - while supporting small farms and ranchers, and the local food system of the fourth biggest city in the US.
"Grow Resilience" is addressing important issues like hunger, health, economic development, and access to safe, outdoor green space - providing ongoing resources and support across our local food system. This project opens pathways for safe & reliable sources of fresh, healthy food, and sustains local farms and small businesses with opportunities for consistent earned income. What's more, Grow Resilience empowers Houstonians to grow their own food and inspires everyone to give gardening a try.
