Summary

We will co-build (with the family members) 250 raised bed gardens with multiple nutritional crops to improve children's malnutrition in 6 Guatemalan departments. This type of agriculture is easier to manage, needs no more than 4 square meters, uses less water than regular farming, and can survive different climate conditions. At least one member of the families will be trained in the best agricultural practices to take the most advantage of their work and assure sustainability.

Challenge

In Guatemala, more than 50% of the families have at least one kid that suffers from malnutrition. 80% of those families live by subsistence farming, this type of living had a lot of risks and do not meet the nutritional diet kids needs. On top of that, the current health pandemic worsens the conditions, and those farmers who had harvested on this season couldn't sell all their products and some had the initiative to donate to ones that didn't have what to eat instead of letting the product go b

Solution

Imagine if you were a farmer that sell your products on another town and then suddenly you were confined to your town without the possibility to go outside and get food and on the top of that the products that you harvest you donate it to the community so everybody can eat something even if this implies loosing your future income. We will build family bed gardens, with multiples crops that will contribute to a more diverse diet, improving mostly child nutrition and expectant mothers' diet.

Long-Term Impact

Give them food and you will feed them for a month, teach them to grow their food and reduce hunger, teach them which food to grow and you will support them to have a nutritional diet. This project will provide 250 families with nutritional crops that will improve their diet, their health, and contribute to reducing hunger. In the long term, these families will have savings from growing their vegetables.
