GuateBuena will provide access to environmentally-friendly, economical, and health-protecting stoves to 100 families in need in communities in Guatemala. This project will have an impact on the families' finances and local natural resources by reducing wood consumption by 60%. It will also benefit their visual and respiratory health by reducing smoke by 90%.
Currently in Guatemala, more than 50% of families use firewood as an energy source for cooking their food. Due to lack of resources, many families, especially amongst the indigenous population, cook over an open fire, which generates high monthly expenses. Wood-burning stoves also involve the depletion of local forests for wood, and negatively affect people's health. According to the WHO World Health Organization, smoke increases the rates of respiratory diseases by 31%.
Our goal is to donate 100 high efficiency, locally manufactured to stoves Guatemalan families in need who are members of GuateBUENA solidarity groups. These stoves use 60% less firewood, saving families money, and produce less indoor smoke, protecting their health. We will also offer environmental awareness workshops to moderate excessive logging and increase awareness of global warming, and preventive health workshops with emphasis on respiratory and visual health.
This project will benefit 100 families by improving their finances, contributing to the health of the local environment by reducing logging, and contribute to the health of the families by reducing rates of respiratory and visual health problems.
