In early November 2020, Storm Eta traveled through Central America, the Caribbean and Florida, causing over 160 fatalities. In Guatemala, hundreds are still missing, following devastating mudslides.Storm Eta has left at least 15,000 Guatemalans inaccessible by road. Crops have been destroyed, landslides and flooding has contaminatedthe water, whole regions are without power, and disease has already begun spreading among the affected populations.
IsraAID's Emergency Response Team traveled from Guatemala City to the affected areas on November 9. The team will distribute essential relief items, to meet the urgent needs identified by the affected communities including, hygiene products; baby care items such as diapers and wipes; towels and underwear. In addition, the team will assess immediate Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mental Health and Psycho-social (MHPSS) and Medical needs.
The first few days following a disaster are crucial towards minimizing its long-term destructive effects. Beyond that, as part of IsraAID's core emphasis on long-term, sustainable recovery, the team will coordinate and engage with local authorities and communities to a) build a longer-term recovery strategy, and b) share expertise and knowledge in sectors such as, Psycho-social support and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, which IsraAID has accrued in 17 years of operations across 46 countries.
