By Emergency Response Team | IsraAID Guatemala
It's been over three months since the Fuego Volcano eruption in Guatemala on June 3rd. At least 113 people were killed, and some 300 went missing. IsraAID’s emergency response team arrived in Escuintla, the worst affected area, on June 5th, only two days after the eruption.
Many schools were devastated by the disaster and over 10,000 students waited for their schools to reopen. On July 9th, schools were finally reconvened in temporary tent classrooms. IsraAID’s emergency response team worked to promote an easy and stable transition.
IsraAID, in collaboration with the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, implemented a 2- day training for 250 teachers, ministry staff, and psychologists, in preparation for the first day back to school. Upon culmination of the training, our team distributed resiliency kits, including ready-to-use materials for psychosocial support activities with students.
Edgar, the team’s driver, quickly became part of IsraAID’s Emergency Response Team in Guatemala, doubling as guide, support, and part-time logistician. He has even started participating in the team’s activities. This picture was taken at a family shelter where IsraAID has provided hygiene kits and psychosocial support on a weekly basis.
32 years old, he lives with his wife, a Kindergarten teacher, and two young daughters in Santa Rosa.
“I do it with all my heart - to work with your team, doing the work you are doing. I like so much being part of this and supporting your work, helping victims of the volcano, especially the kids.”
