Girls Education for Brighter Futures Post-COVID-19

Dear Girls’ Education for Brighter Futures Supporters,

The World Bank in April 2021, reports that 265 million people are going hungry and 140 million are in extreme poverty as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose unprecedented challenges to the global community. Graduate Women International (GWI) continues working actively to coordinate and manage advocacy projects and initiatives on local, national and international levels that focus on building education back better.

The need for funding for education is critical. The International Development Association (World Bank) estimates that countries diverted $25 billion in resources that were planned for infrastructure, schools and education to COVID response for health care, health systems. Now, more than ever, donations are needed to revitalise education funds like the GWI Girls Education for Brighter Futures programme.

GWI is humbled by the support received since the launch of the Girls Education for Brighter Futures Programme in December 2020.  Around the world and despite the current challenges, the various GWI projects continue to positively impact the lives of thousands of women and girls. These locally developed and operated projects address essential needs and build on the knowledge, skills and transformative power of GWI members in their local communities.

One example is in Mexico, through the “Empowering Women through Education” project, GWI members are organizing educational workshops to strengthen women’s awareness of their human rights and the various processes for the promotion of a violence-free life for all women and girls.

Another example is In Nepal, the “Empowerment in Community Schools in Tokha” project is directly contributing to the lessening of the digital gap between private and public schools in the Tokha municipality and is developing interactive learning behaviors through ICT-based knowledge sharing techniques in five community schools. A continuation of an existing project conducted successfully in 2018, this project is expected to raise the quality of education for 1500 students and their 50 teachers. This number is expected to grow exponentially to thousands through the positive impact it will have on the community as a whole and as the router will be used in the subsequent years for other cohorts of children.
