We have very exciting news...HHA is delighted to have partnered with Walkabout Foundation to open a brand new Wheelchair Distribution Centre in Haiti.
The ‘HHA Walkabout Distribution Centre’ will distribute 900+ wheelchairs to all regions of Haiti every year. The centre will not only be the country's first national wheelchair distribution facility that will tackle a critical national need for transforming rehabilitation efforts across Haiti, but will also act as a regional hub for Latin America too.
With the support of Free Wheelchair Mission,13 local partners have been trained in wheelchair provision so far and now have access to a regular and reliable supply of wheelchairs.
In June 2021, a dedicated team from ‘For You Haiti’ collected 50 chairs for their community on the island of La Gonâve, a small island off the coast of Port au Prince. After multiple boat trips, hours of driving and a treacherous journey, they finally made it to the hanger.
“This morning we had a big problem with the truck when people came and cut the tyres. We are so happy to be here and to come and get wheelchairs from Cap Haitian. Thank you HHA so much for your help to the people in this community. Thank you and may God bless you.” Carmy - For You Haiti
We are in awe of the ‘For You Haiti’ team’s passion and endurance to deliver wheelchairs and provide independence to those who struggle with mobility on their island.
Opening this new wheelchair distribution centre is a major step forward in fulfilling our joint dream to ensure that everyone in Haiti who needs a wheelchair can have access to one. We cannot wait to see more of this incredible impact the new collaboration will have, overcoming one of Haiti’s most critical service gaps in supporting persons with disabilities.
We hope that more Haitians with a disability will go on to be independent through these wheelchair distributions. These chairs are already making that possible, and we thank you for your support to make this happen.
