Successful Rehabilitation and Integration

By Sibille Buehlmann | Rehabilitation Unit Manager

Nadège* finished her rehabilitation after sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2012. She was then employed by the hospital to work for our Finance Department. She moved into a small house not too far from the hospital and has been paying someone ever since, to bring her to work and back home every day.

She is completely independent, does all her house work on her own - not easy tasks for a person with complete paraplegia here in Haiti. The circumstances for people living with a disability are very tough with no facilities for those with special physical needs.

From one of our partners we work with here in Haiti, we received a donation that makes Nadège’s life a lot easier now. It is a wheelchair with a battery powered extra wheel. This now enables her to come to work on her own, not depending on someone bringing her and picking her up. It also makes grocery shopping in her town easier for her.

By giving to our rehabilitation project, you will make stories like Nadège’s possible. Rehabilitation therapy is still very new in Haiti so it is important that we can continue to make progress, educate medical staff and the Haitian population about disability. Nadège is proving that with the right support even those with the most severe disabilities can become live full and independent lives.

Thank you for your support.
