Haiti Hurricane Matthew Emergency Response Fund

Haiti Hurricane Matthew Emergency Response Fund

Summary

Hurricane Matthew could have devastating impacts in Haiti, as the country has not experienced a storm of this magnitude since 1954. CARE is coordinating with the government to help people evacuate from areas at extreme risk. We are providing meals and supplies such as water bladders to provide clean drinking water, hygiene kits, tarps and blankets to people in shelters. CARE is appealing for immediate funds to ramp-up our emergency response and support the longer-term recovery of Haiti.

Challenge

Hurricane Matthew, which has been classified as a Category 4 hurricane, has just landed in Haiti, bringing strong winds of over 155 miles per hour and as much as 12 inches of heavy rainfall in some areas. The hurricane is expected to produce potentially deadly flooding and mudslides and cause catastrophic damage to houses, infrastructure, crops, and water and sanitation systems. CARE needs immediate, flexible funding to allow us to mount a comprehensive and timely response.

Solution

CARE has an Emergency Response Team in place in preparation for the Hurricane season. Care response will focus on the most immediate needs such as water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) - in particular securing safe water supplies and hygiene kits - as well as ensuring shelter for people who have lost their homes. CARE is also prepared to scale-up the food security project, the project will deploy additional food security support to those most affected.

Long-Term Impact

This fund will also support the long-term rehabilitation efforts on the ground. As the first stage emergency response is completed, CARE will transition to provide more durable solutions, allowing families to rebuild their homes, infrastructure and lives. CARE will continue working to build local capacity and address the roots of vulnerability and poverty.
