September 2024 Update: Haiti Earthquake Relief

By Aicha Belabbes | Community Giving Coordinator

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your contribution to Partners In Health’s response to the earthquake in Haiti. Your support ensures we remain dedicated to realizing the human right to health care!

Immediately after the earthquake Partners In Health (PIH) and our sister organization in Haiti, Zanmi Lasante (ZL), mobilized a response to this devastating emergency by deploying clinicians and supplies to the earthquake zone, transferring critically injured patients to PIH/ZL-supported health facilities, supporting the emergency response needs of long term partners based in the affected areas, and preparing for the long-term impact on Haiti’s health sector following this emergency.

We are proud of ZL’s resilience and ability to grow despite challenging and turbulent times. August was particularly significant for us at Zanmi Lasante. On August 12th, with the support of PIH, Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) and the Ministry of Health, we proudly inaugurated a new oxygen plant at the Thomonde Health Center in the Central Plateau. In a country where this vital product is often unavailable and unaffordable for the poorest, this facility, which will save countless lives, was built through collaboration, determination, and a shared belief in our mission. It serves as a powerful reminder that our work can indeed be a beacon of hope, even in the face of demoralizing political and economic horizons.

Our journey is not without its complications. The current crisis management efforts have demanded flexibility, innovation, and a constant reassessment of our resources. Despite these obstacles, we have remained steadfast, learning, adapting, and emerging stronger. To overcome roadblocks disrupting our supply chains, we have forged new paths and expanded our storage capacities. Gas shortages, which often paralyze the country, have spurred us to accelerate our transition towards solar energy for the facilities we support. We have recently rendered fully operational the solar energy system at the Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais (HUM), significantly reducing our fuel consumption by over sixty percent.

On behalf of those we serve, thank you for your support and partnership in pursuit of equitable health systems that can fulfill the right to health care for all.

In Solidarity,

Partners In Health
