Responding to Haiti's next crisis

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your contribution to Partners In Health’s response to the earthquake in Haiti. Your support ensures we remain dedicated to realizing the human right to health care!

Immediately after the earthquake Partners In Health (PIH) and our sister organization in Haiti, Zanmi Lasante (ZL), mobilized a response to this devastating emergency by deploying clinicians and supplies to the earthquake zone, transferring critically injured patients to PIH/ZL-supported health facilities, supporting the emergency response needs of long term partners based in the affected areas, and preparing for the long-term impact on Haiti’s health sector following this emergency.

Now, Haiti is in the midst of another crisis with political turmoil and gang violence endangering the lives of residents and making basic tasks like finding food and clean water a difficult, if not impossible, task.

With 44% of the population facing major food insecurity, the worsening food crisis has left the country with the heaviest burden of hunger and malnutrition in the Western Hemisphere. PIH/ZL has set up mobile medical clinics to address mailnutrition and also provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, vaccinations, and medical care. The mobile clinic team delivered services in the face of enormous challenges, from gas shortages and vehicle issues to gang activity, kidnappings and the personal mental toll. These results are a testament to their commitment and resolve.

July 2023 Update: Haiti Earthquake Relief

Partners In Health (PIH) and our sister organization in Haiti, Zanmi Lasante (ZL), have mobilized an immediate response to this devastating emergency by deploying clinicians and supplies to the earthquake zone, transferring critically injured patients to PIH/ZL-supported health facilities, supporting the emergency response needs of long term partners based in the affected areas, and preparing for the long-term impact on Haiti’s health sector following this emergency. PIH/ZL’s emergency response centers on partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Health and support that reinforces local partners and the broader public health system in Haiti.

PIH/ZL continues to gather information about the extent of injuries, critical needs, and local partner capacity to hone its response to the most urgent needs following the earthquake. PIH/ZL will continue to adapt its activities to remain nimble to the evolving needs and priorities that arise and uphold our organizational commitment to reinforcing the long-term resilience of health systems for all Haitians.

In continuation of our emergency response and more immediate investment in facilities and care delivery, PIH/ZL will grow formalized training programs over a longer-term 12-month period to ensure Haiti has the capacity and trained staff to be prepared to respond to any future disaster.

March 2023 Haiti Earthquake Relief Update

Dear Friends,

On behalf of all our staff and patients, thank you for your generous giving to Partners In Health! We are so grateful for your partnership and your commitment to our mission.

The magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Haiti on August 14 in 2021 left thousands killed, critically injured, and displaced. Zanmi Lasante (ZL), as Partners In Health is known locally, continued to support the provision of urgent care and support the continuum of care for all patients.

Since the devastating 2021 earthquake, Haiti has experienced a series of disasters—another earthquake in 2022, paralyzing financial challenges, increased gang violence, protests, and roadblocks, and rising starvation and malnutrition among children and adults. Some weeks, we have seen a near-complete lockdown in most of the country.

Your support has been critical. The team at Zanmi Lasante is displaying extraordinary courage and has shown incredible dedication amidst the strife, even over concerns for their personal safety. With gas stations running dry, grocery shelves emptied, banks closed, and health facilities shuttered throughout the country, Zanmi Lasante has kept the doors open and the lights on in every single facility.

Your transformative gift could not have come at a more important time for Partners In Health. Our community is in need of more care than ever. On behalf of our staff and patients in 11 countries worldwide, thank you for choosing to support PIH!
