Laboratory Staff in rural and urban areas of Ghana use laborious paper-based laboratory information system (LIS) because they do not have hands-on training on how to use available electronic LIS. Working with Georgia Tech, USA and some Labs in Ghana, we have successfully tested and can offer a solution - free(open source) LIS. Our project will provide 1,000 lab users with the opportunity to develop vital technology skills to use electronic LIS.
Computer and electronic LIS skills are needed for laboratory staff to use electronic LIS. However, many public and private laboratories do not have computers and the software, so the staff cannot practice and use. They provide laboratory results late and sometimes results with errors. The cost of waiting time and errors in Ghana is high. Without skills, they are unable to use the software and provide results within their target turnaround time.
Hundred computers equipped with the open source (free) laboratory information system with no internet as a requirement for use, we will visit each facility to train the laboratory staff, provide onsite and remote support, reaching 1,000 laboratory users. With regular skills practice, the laboratory staff will provide results within their target turnaround time, standardised and accurate results.

This project expands our training for 120 Ghanaian laboratory staff, initiated by Association of Public Health Laboratories, USA/Koachie Health Systems and piloted in 2011/12.
