Challenge

In Maui, Hawaii, thousands of families have been displaced after a devastating fire burned across the island in August 2023. Asia America Initiative and our partners have provided food, hygiene, protective masks and basic health care items for more than 1000 displaced families and first responders. Recovery has just begun. AAI will help families recover from trauma and assist long term rebuilding of lives. Your donation will provide recovery for intercultural neighbors who survived the fire.

Solution

This program will encourage long-term inter-cultural cooperation among the people of diverse heritage in Lahaina and other areas of Maui. They include native Hawaiians, American citizens from mainland U.S., Filipinos, Japanese, Pacific islanders and Latin American migrant workers. We are creating a consortium of local elders, church leaders, school teachers, firefighters, university-based economic experts, psychologists, military members and civic organizations.

Long-Term Impact

This program is intended to be measurable with a unified plan of action and accountability by all groups and community leaders involved. The emphasis on responsible leadership with broad community involvement is intended to build strong partnerships between aid providers and beneficiary communities. Regardless of language and cultural differences, program organizers seek to lead by example. Our key words are resilience, responsibility and building with local social capital to sustain recovery.
