In Nigeria, 1 in 3 women has experienced physical or sexual violence, often from intimate partners. Many cases go unreported due to stigma and fear. Changing male attitudes is key to breaking the cycle. This project will train 890 men across rural and urban communities to challenge harmful norms, promote respect, and take active roles in ending violence against women. The urgent need is to shift behaviors now and prevent new cases while supporting safer communities for women and girls.
Gender-based violence remains widespread in Nigeria, with cultural norms, economic stress, and lack of education fueling abuse. Women face stigma when reporting cases, while perpetrators are rarely held accountable. Men are often excluded from prevention efforts, even though they play a central role in either perpetuating or ending violence. Without engaging men directly, violence continues to harm women, families, and communities across generations.
The He4She project trains men to become agents of change by challenging harmful practices, promoting respect, and learning non-violent conflict resolution. Through structured workshops, discussions, and peer-led campaigns, 890 men will be equipped to influence their peers and families. By raising awareness and providing practical tools, these men can prevent violence before it occurs and create safer environments for women and girls in their communities.
When men adopt respectful behaviors and challenge harmful norms, communities begin to shift. Trained men will spread knowledge, encourage others to reject violence, and serve as positive role models for younger generations. This project can reduce cases of abuse, increase reporting and accountability, and create safer spaces for women to thrive. Over time, engaging men at scale will contribute to breaking cycles of violence and building healthier family structures.
