This summer two LAUSD teachers and Heal One World, join together and pool their resources to start a summer camp along with single moms, that gives the mom’s ten kids a chance to explore the diversity of the city of Angels while engaging in weekly services projects, over 8 weeks, such as building a community garden at a local school, beautifying a nearby park, initiating a recycling program, and several local projects that connect learning and fun with community service. Heal One World (HOW) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, based in Mid-City.
A.W.A.R.E. stands for Activism, Well-being, Art, Rhythm and Environment. A highlight is the community service aspect of the camp. Campers will be involved in service projects ranging from creating a community garden at the nearby Carson-Gore Environmental Academy to beautification of Queen Annes Recreation Center Park. Exploring the Mid-City community. They will get to volunteer at other local charities, as well as Heal One World, which holds free preventative health classes. The campers will benefit from daily yoga, meditation, tai chi and various movement classes and games provided by Heal One World. Additionally, campers will learn about healthful meal options and prepare their meals from local farms and cooperatives.
Another exciting aspect of the camp is the film program that the Awareness Festival team of volunteer film makers is set to mentor the ten campers in writing, shooting, editing and producing their own films based on their LA summer experience. The camper video will be integrated and will form the bases of a larger documentary about the extraordinary things ordinary kids, moms, teachers and community members can do in America when given the support and resources to build a better planet Earth, while exploring their city and attending exciting team events and Los Angeles landmarks.
