Children with critical and/or chronic illnesses and those with life-altering disabilities often experience pain, fear, depression, anxiety and isolation. They suffer from feelings of lack of control over their lives and the physical changes that often accompany illness, injury or disability can be devastating. The severe illness or disability of a child also takes an enormous toll on the entire family. This program provides an average of 10,000 healing art experiences annually.
CHAP's Hospital Art programs feature an ever-changing array of art supplies and projects, and teaching artists trained to assist children to tap into their emotions and communicate their feelings visually. The CHAP sessions also give kids a moment away from the sterile, scary hospital environment surrounding them with color and sparkles. Our out-patient Art Club is Free and open to any child receiving treatment for a medical or mental health challenge. Art helps heal. CHAP helps kids be kids.
This program helps patients and family members cope; encourages compliance with treatment plans; increases self-confidence; encourages self-expression during difficult times; reduces stress, pain, isolation, and anxiety; and contributes to overall well-being. Recent research has also shown that art can reduce blood pressure and therefore improve patient outcomes. It also provides a carrying community where parents feel supported and can begin dialogue with others experiencing the same trauma.
