Kids for Kids works with communities in Darfur, Sudan - an area that suffers the increasing effects of climate change. We plant 15 species of trees in community forests across 110 villages. The forests are creating microclimates that reduce soil temperatures, increase soil moisture levels, stabilise the soil and stop the desert encroaching. These drought-resistant trees also provide shade, fruit to combat food insecurity - and the seeds of the Moringa tree can also be used to clean water!
Darfur is in The Sahel region of Africa which is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Current climate change patterns may cause more extreme and variable climates in the future, threatening agricultural productivity in many areas of Darfur. This in turn exacerbates the level of poverty in the area as well as food insecurity. These warmer temperatures lead to a degradation of the land and an increase in desertification resulting in the desert encroaching into agricultural land.
Planting trees increases the soil moisture, stabilises the soil and reduces temperatures by creating a microclimate. This leads to a more fertile environment for crops to grow, increased rainfall and keeps the desert at bay. Trees provide shade for people and animals from the hot desert sun, food to eat to combat food insecurity, and the seeds of the Moringa tree even clean water - the key to life! Right now we are planting a Community Tree Nursery in Um Ga'al Village. Can you help?!
By planting trees, we are creating microclimates around each village in an area where moisture levels are virtually non-existent. Microclimates reduce the temperature of the surrounding soil, stabilising moisture levels. This reduces desertification and degradation whilst also helping communities to have a more successful crop yield - leading to an increase in income and a reduction in food insecurity. We dream of a community forest in every Kids for Kids village and clean water for all!
