CAMELEON supports young girls who are survivors of sexual violence by providing a safe, structured, and caring environment where healing can begin. Alongside psychological, educational, and legal support, the project offers Animal-Assisted Therapy. Through non-judgmental interactions with animals, girls can rebuild a sense of safety, reconnect with others, express emotions, and strengthen self-confidence. Your support makes this innovative and effective therapy accessible to survivors.
Girls supported by CAMELEON have survived repeated sexual violence and often experience post-traumatic symptoms such as hypervigilance, emotional withdrawal, fear of contact or aggression. While CAMELEON provides comprehensive medical, psychological, educational, and legal support, survivors also need safe non-verbal pathways to feel secure in their daily lives. Animal-Assisted Therapy offers a complementary approach to deepen emotional recovery, rebuild trust, and reinforce existing care.
Girls participate in Animal-Assisted Therapy sessions with dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens. Simple actions such as feeding, grooming, observing, or walking the animals create calming, predictable routines that reduce stress, fear, and anxiety. Observations show improved emotional regulation, self-care, concentration, empathy, and responsibility. These interactions strengthen trust, social skills, and improve relationships with peers, caregivers, and themselves.
To date, 90 girls have benefited from Animal-Assisted Therapy and four team members have been trained. With continued support, CAMELEON will sustain this program by ensuring animal welfare, strengthening staff capacity, and developing dedicated therapeutic spaces. Over time, this model can be expanded and replicated in partner centers, offering more survivors access to this effective and complementary pathway for healing and empowerment.
