Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is one of CAMELEON's signature approaches, developed over years of work with girls who have survived sexual violence. Its effects on their recovery have been consistently observed by our team: girls gain confidence, regulate their emotions better, and rebuild trust in others.
From June to August, CAMELEON facilitated 11 AAT sessions for 36 girls, addressing topics related to self-control, entitlement, and dependence. The sessions provided a supportive environment where the girls could explore their emotions, reflect on their behaviors, and practice healthier ways of responding to everyday challenges.
Through guided interactions with animals and structured therapeutic activities, the sessions encouraged the girls to practice patience, respect boundaries, and develop a sense of responsibility. Activities focused on managing impulses, recognizing the needs of others, and balancing the need for support with greater personal independence.
CAMELEON continues to provide therapeutic and innovative approaches to support the girls’ psychosocial well-being through AAT. These sessions form part of its ongoing commitment to nurturing emotional resilience, strengthening interpersonal skills, and supporting the girls’ healing and personal growth.
A short testimony from one of the girls:“Being with the animals helped me pause, breathe, and understand what I was feeling. I learned that my actions affect others, that trust takes patience, and that caring means respecting boundaries. I am learning to take responsibility for my choices and to do more for myself, while knowing it is okay to ask for support. Through CAMELEON’s Animal-Assisted Therapy sessions, I am discovering that I can be gentle and strong at the same time.” – Marie, 16 years old
