This project aims to build a cyclone proof health training facility in Lailenpi, Chin State, Burma. Over the past 6 years, the previous centre, now flattened by Cyclone Mora, has supported the training of 834 Community Health Workers from 551 villages across southern Chin and Rakhine State. In addition the facility was used as a distribution centre for food relief during natural disasters. Torrential rain and high winds in western Myanmar have destroyed homes and triggered landslides in rural villages within Chin State. The severity of storms has increased over recent years. Elders from the town in Lailenpi have said that damage caused by the storm was the worst they have witnessed, with heavy rain continuing to hamper relief efforts. Rebuilding of the training centre is essential to deliver ongoing primary healthcare services to villagers across the region.
The project will provide support for the rebuilding of Health and Hope's training centre with brick and mortar rather than timber and aluminium sheeting. The training centre supports Health and Hope's low-cost model of community-led primary healthcare serving over 250,000 people. The project supports the ongoing training of Community Health Workers, Traditional Birth Attendants, food security, relief work and educational projects among local children studying for their high school exams.
Health and Hope's approach is to create a low-cost model of community-led primary healthcare, with access for all, that demonstrates the capability, capacity and resilience of local people to 'self-develop', rather than being 'other-dependent'. The end-vision of this model is to demonstrate a credible approach to the government of community-led healthcare services at the village level which addresses 80% of primary healthcare needs within the community.
