Health in Her Hands: Cancer Awareness & Screening

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we've now reached 65% of our fundraising goal, raising US$10,690 through GlobalGiving. Of this total, US$7,011 was donated during last year's Passport to Purpose campaign, with the remainder coming from the ongoing support of generous monthly and individual donors. Every contribution is helping more women access life-saving cancer screening and treatment.

Between January and July 2026, our team carried out 654 health checkups, with 559 women choosing to have a visual cervical screening performed by one of our trained midwives. Not every woman receiving a checkup undergoes a cervical examination, as some are menstruating at the time of their visit or choose not to be examined.

Of the 559 cervical screenings, 468 women showed no signs of abnormal cells, while 91 women tested positive for precancerous cervical changes. Every one of these 91 women received immediate treatment to remove the abnormal cells using either thermal coagulation (heat treatment) or cryotherapy (freezing), helping prevent the development of cervical cancer. Fifty-six women also required referral for specialist assessment or additional investigations, including Pap smears, to ensure they received the most appropriate follow-up care.

Our Bali-based team also performed 648 clinical breast examinations. 634 women had normal results, while 12 women were found to have breast lumps. All 12 women were counselled on the importance of further investigation and referred for specialist care. Six chose to proceed with specialist assessment, while the remaining six decided not to pursue additional testing.

Our midwives, nurses and doctors take time to discuss every abnormal result with compassion and care, encouraging women to seek further testing and treatment when needed. Sadly, fear often becomes a barrier. Some women worry that a diagnosis of cancer could lead to treatment their families simply cannot afford, such as surgery or chemotherapy. While we respect every woman's right to make her own healthcare decisions, these conversations highlight the urgent need for accessible screening, early detection and affordable treatment—before cancer reaches an advanced stage.

Thanks to your generosity, so far we've raised US $8,176 or 50% of the additional funding needed to continue our cancer awareness and screening work in 2026. This support is crucial as we expand outreach to women in villages near our clinic in Ubud.

In 2025, our staff conducted 2190 screenings for cervical and breast cancer as a result of our outreach programs. Of the women screened, 6.9% needed further visual cervical examination, 9.7% needed cryo treatment for suspicious cells and 2% needed referrals for more advanced treatment. 

By giving women awareness and self-empowermnet through affordable screening and follow-up care, we are catching potentially life-threatening conditions early — when treatment is most effective. With additional funding, we aim to expand and continue offering this essential service to more women across Bali.
