Wearing masks is the issue!

By Zintathu Luvalo | HIV Counsellor and MD

Health project update

As we were approaching the festive season we continue with the struggle of COVID 19 in our communities, some people needed more understanding of the pandemic and were having questions, we did a home visit where education about HIV/ Aids and COVID 19  was done.

People got to understand that vaccination was the way to protect themselves and those they love. They did come to vaccinate especially the elderly people. There is still uncertainty with the vaccine, especially the youth and I go to the villages to make sure people do not listen to false reports/ fake news and work together in protecting our people instead.

During the home visit, we gave out educational booklets about Covid-19 vaccination effect on HIV/Aids treatment. By doing so we were encouraging those that are affected by HIV/Aids to get vaccinated.  They were scared of taking the vaccine, thinking it might affect them negatively. We also continue encouraging people to get tested and take medication.

I can say 1 person in each household was willing to go around, and share information regarding our teachings. It is always better that we teach each other and share valuable information. We continue advising that people continue sanitising and washing their hands even after receiving the vaccine. We are however still having a problem with mask-wearing and we encourage the wearing of masks as well.

One young man was at first it was very difficult to talk to about Covid -19.  He didn’t believe COVID 19 is real. He said it’s made up by someone somewhere and probably won’t affect him. But a long chat educating him and also demonstrating the sickness visually with pictures, he was convinced and willing to vaccinate. He also asked more questions about HIV/Aids transmission. He was even willing to join our HIV programme, to help in the schools' health education this year.

We would like to thank you for your generous support and wish you all the best for 2022.

Yours sincerely
