Children with Down syndrome have additional healthcare needs which require specialized medical attention and support that not many parents/caregivers can afford. KDSP therefore partners with leading healthcare institutions and practitioners to ensure children with Down syndrome benefit from quality subsidized healthcare. This year, KDSP aims to facilitate more than 450 referrals.
Through innovation in medical technology, the health of children with Down syndrome has improved vastly. Despite this, these children have healthcare needs beyond standard medical care, with susceptibility to conditions such as blood diseases and heart defects. Developmental and behavioral challenges are also common. Parents/caregivers struggle to find healthcare service providers who understand these challenges and provide their services at inexpensive rates.
KDSP has collaborated with the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) to launch the first-of-its-kind Down Syndrome Clinic consisting of multiple qualified pediatric specialists who provide consultations at a discount. A partnership with The Indus Hospital is also in place to facilitate children from financially challenged backgrounds. KDSP also runs Developmental Pediatrics and Behavior Therapy clinics and facilitates medical procedures of children who are critical through its partner hospitals.
Providing access to affordable and top-quality healthcare services eases worries of parents/caregivers pertaining to their children's health. Not only are they guided about the condition(s) but also the treatment, behavior and overall development of their child. On the other hand, healthy children with Down syndrome are able to develop enhanced immunity, become more active in their daily lives and work towards achieving their full potential.
