Alex was born in late August 2021 in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. He came into the world without any prenatal medical care and with a condition that made his first days of life incredibly difficult: a cleft lip and palate. Burdened by family debts built up during a year of unpaid community service, his father had to leave for the distant fields of Sonora to work as a day laborer. His mother was left behind to care for their four children alone, facing an invisible but massive barrier: she only speaks Tsotsil.
Although a local dentist tried to help and referred them to an association, the lack of translators meant his mother couldn’t understand the medical instructions. Time was running out, and feeding Alex became a daily struggle. At four months old, thanks to a neighbor who knew of our work, his mother arrived at the Sanando Heridas Clinic in San Cristóbal de las Casas holding her baby in her arms. Her eyes pleaded for help; her voice needed to be heard.
That is where a true chain of human support began. Our bilingual nurse became her voice, her guide, and her unconditional ally. We didn’t just manage the special bottle Alex needed and his specialized dental treatment; we walked by her side to get his birth certificate, arrange transportation, and secure specialized hospital care. At the mother's request, we even maintained constant phone contact with the father in the north so he could be part of every step of his son's journey.
The path to surgery was not without obstacles. There was a painful moment when, after a full week of medical tests and packed bags in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the operation was abruptly canceled due to an administrative error. The emotional toll was heavy, but we didn’t leave them alone. After coordinating directly with the specialist, Alex finally entered the operating room on June 2, 2022.
When he came out of surgery, the mother's tears moved the entire team. Overjoyed, she told our nurse in her native language: “My son is a whole new child; he is not the same one who went in. He looks so different.” Her very first request was for help sending a photograph to the father in Sonora, bridging the distance with an image of pure hope.
Yet, the family’s trials were not over. Shortly after, the father lost his job in the north, and the money stopped coming. With no resources left, the mother was forced to replace Alex’s milk with water or pozol, causing the little boy to return to our clinic with a severe respiratory infection and malnutrition. We immediately launched an emergency plan, providing monthly nutritional monitoring and securing their food supply thanks to grocery donations from the Dr. Simi Foundation.
Today, the picture is completely different. Alex has successfully undergone his third and final surgery. He is in excellent health and is ready to start preschool next year with a beautifully restored smile.
This miracle of transformation would not be possible without people who believe in empathy and solidarity. Thanks to donations like yours, at Sanando Heridas we can tear down cultural and economic barriers to save lives. Thank you so much for changing the future for Alex and his family!
